Equinox – A Time of Balance

Equinox – A Time of Balance

Sun and Moon

Today is the Vernal, or Spring, Equinox. But what does that mean?

For most of the year, the Earth tilts on it’s axis, but twice per year at the Equinoxes the Earth stands up straight. When the Earth’s axis goes vertical, the Sun shines directly along the Equator and night and day are equal in both hemispheres. The Autumnal Equinox happens around September 22 and the Vernal Equinox around March 20. In the Northern Hemisphere, the Vernal Equinox marks the beginning of Spring and the Fall Equinox marks the beginning of Autumn.

The days before and after Equinox are a perfect time to reinvigorate balance in your life, to bring that peace of balance into yourself.

To celebrate the Equinox, here is a simple meditation along with three yoga poses that encourage balance and can help you to take advantage of the natural balance that is occurring.

Meditation

(Breathe in with the first word of the meditation, out with the second.)

Sun – Moon.

Light – Darkness.

Day – Night.

North – South.

East – West.

Sunrise – Sunset.

Summer – Winter.

Today I feel the balance of the Earth and it’s elements. I sense the symmetry of this day, and take that balance into myself. Through balance I am able to face the challenges of my day and the days to come, and to savor in the victories and happiness that enters into my life.

Summer – Winter.

Sunrise – Sunset.

East – West.

North – South.

Day – Night.

Light – Darkness.

Sun – Moon.

When working on balance poses, remember to find a spot in front of you on which you can focus your attention. This is essential to balance poses. If you are wishing to increase the power of these meditations and bring in the Equinox theme, you can place a picture of the sun in front of you and meditate on the theme of balance during the pose, using the previous meditation.

Utkatasana (Awkward Chair Pose)

utkatasana

  1. Stand with spine straight, feet on the floor and hands at your sides (Mountain Pose or Tadasana).
  2. Bend slightly at the waist, increasing until the thighs are almost parallel to the floor.
  3. Lower your butt, feeling strength and balance from your core.
  4. Slowly raise your hands toward the ceiling, arms straight and fingers spread wide as though you are holding a ball.
  5. Bend the  upper back slightly.
  6. Breathe deeply five times while holding.
  7. Release the pose, reversing until you return to Tadasana.

Garudasana (Eagle Pose)

garudasana

  1.  Begin from Utkatasana (Awkward Chair Pose).
  2. Slowly lift the right foot off the floor by bending the right leg, then cross your right thigh over your left thigh.
  3. Bring the right foot behind the left calf, hooking  your foot behind your leg.
  4. Lift your arms out in front of you, crossing the left arm over the right arm and touching your palms together.
  5. Bring the elbows up while keeping the shoulders down and back.
  6. Breathe deeply five times while holding.
  7. Slowly reverse the steps, then repeat on the other side.

Vrksasana (Tree Pose)

tree pose

  1. Stand with spine straight, feet on the floor and hands at your sides (Mountain Pose or Tadasana).
  2. Grounding yourself, become aware of your weight across the bottoms of both feet.
  3. Slowly lift your left foot, transferring your weight to the right foot.
  4. Bring the sole of the left foot to the inner thigh of your right leg, placing all of your weight onto your left foot.
  5. Pull your right thigh and left foot towards the center, keeping your hips square to the front.
  6. Bring your hands to the center, palms together and either stay in the position or circle your arms wide and bring palms together high above your head as pictured.
  7. Breathe deeply five times while holding (or longer if you’re feeling strong and centered in the pose).
  8. Slowly reverse the steps, then repeat on the other side.

Happy Equinox!
